Explore a DU Student’s Favorite Hikes

While Colorado is a skier’s paradise in the winter, the summer months transform the state into a hiker’s dream. With trails ranging from beginner-friendly strolls to challenging climbs, there’s a hike for everyone. Here are a few of the best summer hikes in Colorado to add to your bucket list. 

St. Mary’s Glacier  

Located just an hour from Denver, this short but scenic hike rewards you with views of a stunning glacier and alpine lake. The hike itself is just under two miles round trip, making it perfect for beginners or families. Don’t forget to pack a picnic and enjoy the serene surroundings by the lake. Bonus: bring a sled to slide down the snow, even in July! Dogs are welcome on this trail, so feel free to bring your furry friend along for the adventure.

Hanging Lake  

Hanging Lake in Glenwood Canyon is a must-see. This is a steep 1.2-mile trail that leads to an awe-inspiring turquoise lake surrounded by waterfalls. Due to its popularity, you’ll need to make a reservation to visit, but it’s well worth the effort. The crystal-clear waters and lush greenery create a fairytale-like atmosphere. Be sure to follow all guidelines to help preserve this natural wonder for future generations.

Mount Bierstadt  

For those seeking a challenge, consider tackling Mount Bierstadt, one of Colorado’s famed “14ers” (peaks over 14,000 feet). This 7-mile trail is demanding but offers breathtaking panoramic views from the summit. Make sure to start early to avoid afternoon thunderstorms, and pack plenty of water, snacks, and layers. Summiting a 14er is a quintessential Colorado experience that’s as rewarding as it is challenging.

Roxborough State Park  

If you’re looking for a more relaxed outing, head to Roxborough State Park. Just 45 minutes from DU, its red sandstone formations and wildflower-filled meadows make it an ideal spot for a peaceful day hike. The park offers several trails of varying lengths, so you can choose one that suits your energy level. Don’t forget your camera. The dramatic landscapes are picture-perfect.
