Key Steps Juniors Should Take Before Senior Year to Succeed in College Admissions
With just a few weeks left of junior year, now’s the perfect time to start laying the groundwork for a smooth college application season. As an admission counselor at the University of Denver, I encourage rising seniors to use late spring and summer to get ahead, so you can enjoy senior year without feeling rushed.
First things first, wrap up junior year strong. Your final grades matter and are taken into consideration when we look at your application. This is also a good moment to thank teachers who’ve supported you so far – you may want to ask some of them for recommendation letters soon.
Over the summer, research colleges that fit your interests and goals. Make a list of your top picks and start exploring their websites.
Do you already know what you want to study, or do you need time to explore? Which colleges have the programs you’re passionate about? Which schools have the clubs and campus life you’re looking for? What kind of setting do you want to live in for the next four years? If you want access to the mountains and all the fun of the big city, DU checks both those boxes!
Start thinking about campus visits, too, so you can experience your top picks firsthand. DU offers virtual and in-person campus tours all summer long, giving you an up-close look at our campus and academic opportunities.
Next, get organized. Set up a system to track important deadlines – everything from applications to scholarships. Here are a few key dates to keep in mind for DU:
- August 1: The Common App opens, where you’ll create an account and complete your DU application.
- October 1: The CSS Profile and FAFSA open. Be sure to complete both if you’re applying for need-based financial aid. (At DU, we automatically consider all applicants for merit scholarships!)
- November 1: Deadline for Early Decision I and Early Action applications.
- January 15: Deadline for Early Decision II and Regular Decision applications.
The summer before your senior year is also a great time to start drafting your personal statement and updating your activity list while your junior year achievements are fresh in your mind.
If you plan to take the SAT or ACT, register early and set aside time to study and prepare, but keep in mind that DU is test-optional.
Finally, think about how you want your senior year to look. Which classes and activities will help you grow and tell your story best? Taking small steps now will pay off big time when application season kicks into high gear.
